There’s something very special that unites all women: we all have a past.

“DeLores,” you may be thinking, “How is that special? Isn’t our past typically something negative?” No. Our past – even the poor choices and skeletons hiding in it – is not inherently negative!

Every piece of our past, from the opportunities we glossed over because we were immature to the unhealthy relationships we got into because we didn’t know better, have made us who we are today. They don’t dictate our future successes, but they can be used as building blocks to get to where we want to be!

The negative people, places, choices, etc. in your past cannot be changed, but you can change the way you look at them. You can choose to see the positives in each negative.

For example, that friendship that was toxic to you in your twenties and led to some poor choices did happen. That cannot be changed. However, that’s not you. That’s not your destiny. The fact that it happened is not inherently negative, either, because you learned something from it. You learned how to stand up for yourself. That is a positive and a positive trait you still carry with you today even though it derived from something negative. All negative experiences carry a positive trait. Here are some steps you can take to begin taking all the negative experiences you have had and turning them into building blocks toward a successful future:

Step 1: Reframe the negative parts of your past

Sit and write down all the positive things that came from each negative experience you have had.

As you enter this marvelous stage of your life, it’s so important to reframe such “negative” parts of your past as building blocks: building blocks to a fabulous, fulfilling destiny!

Step 2: Step into Your Purpose

We all have a God given purpose and if you haven’t embraced yours yet because you believe your past makes you unworthy of doing so, this is the time to change that mindset.

Step 3: Commit Fully

This is the time of your life to commit fully to your God given purpose – whatever it may be and however you’ve gotten to this point. Decide today to walk in your purpose.

Do you think God wants you to shy away from the gift he wants you to share with the world because your past had some bumps in the road? No. Your purpose is greater than your past. Your past does not determine your destiny; you determine your destiny by how you choose to look at your past.
